Golf courses have existed in Morocco since the beginning of the 20th century, and this sport in the country received real development during the reign of King Hassan II, for whom golf became a favorite hobby. It was under him that the rapid construction of golf courses in Morocco began, and today there are already about 40 of them.
The mild sunny climate all year round and a wide range of quality courses to suit all tastes and skill levels make Morocco a popular and rapidly growing golf destination for European tourists. Geographical proximity and good value for money make it a successful competitor to traditional golf destinations such as Spain and Portugal.
Golf, brought to Morocco by the British back in 1917, received the seal of royal approval in the late 60s, when King Hassan II became addicted to this sport. Photographs in the newspapers showed King Hassan II in the latest golf fashion, playing a game with other senior officials. This was followed by a frenetic construction of golf courses across the country, and now there are several dozen golf courses in Morocco with the number of holes from 18 to 36. Some of them were designed by famous masters such as Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones and his protégé Cabell B. Robinson . Crown Prince Moulay Rashid took over his father’s passion, established the Royal Golf Academy and headed the Royal Moroccan Golf Association.
